UPDATE FROM SEN. CORNYN, MARCH 2

WASHINGTON, March 2 -- The office of Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, issued the following newsletter:

The recent President's Day recess gave me the welcomed opportunity to travel back to Texas. Washington's been a pretty gloomy place of late, so I enjoyed my time in Texas where the sun shines brighter and the folks are friendlier. As always, my meetings with Texans offered me valuable insight into the troubles they are facing and common-sense solutions and ideas that I can take back to Washington to get our country moving in the right direction.

Sen. Cornyn hosted an economic roundtable in East Texas to hear from local leaders and small business owners.I learned a lot from local leaders and small business owners in East Texas during an economic roundtable I hosted in Tyler. As I have said before, many of the best ideas in government stem from the local level - from the men and women who deal with our nation's challenges on the front lines every day. It was no exception in East Texas. While Texas has fared better than most, our state is not immune to the economic downturn. Thankfully, Texas has a long tradition of encouraging growth and attracting new business. As I saw firsthand, the spirit of entrepreneurism and ingenuity continues in East Texas, and all of Texas, and together we will work to revive the local economy and emerge stronger and more prosperous.

I also met with Texans in Austin, where I was joined by Congressman Lamar Smith and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, and I unveiled my plan to crack down on internet predators who aim to harm our children. This was an issue I spent a lot of time on as Texas Attorney General, and I'm proud to continue the fight in Washington against these despicable acts. While the Internet has generated many positive changes in the way we communicate and do business, its limitless nature offers anonymity that has opened the door to criminals looking to harm innocent children. Keeping our children safe requires cooperation on the local, state, federal and family level, and together, with the help of vigilant families and members of the community, we can continue to deter individuaSen. Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Abbott discuss efforts they are taking to crack down on internet crime.ls from targeting our children and remove these dangers from the Internet.

In Houston, Texans serving in the US Army helped shed some light on a disturbing problem I have been following closely - Army recruiters committing suicide. I welcomed the chance to hear from local recruiters firsthand about their daily experiences and challenges, and to also hear from Army officials who are working to find the causes of the problem and ways to fix it. As the families of the fallen recruiters continue to grieve, it is critical that we honor the memory of their loved ones and take every possible step to ensure this kind of tragedy does not occur again. I can assure our military families in Texas that I will continue to do everything in my power to prevent future tragedies and support their loved ones in uniform.

Another serioSen. Cornyn visits with recruiters at a recruiting station from the U.S. Army Houston Recruiting Battalion.us problems Texans are facing is the escalating violence along our border with Mexico. Drug cartels, gangs and weapons smuggling are threatening the safety and lives of Texans, particularly those along the border, and I appreciated the opportunity to meet with local law enforcement officials along the border, representatives from U.S. federal agencies and Mexican officials to talk about the many complex issues our two nations face. I believe this issue has serious implications not only for Texas, but for our entire nation as well. The situation demands that we dedicate sufficient attention to this problem and the resources needed to address it. The safety of Texas communities along the southern border with Mexico is a top priority of mine, and I am committed to making certain they do not fall victim to the rising violence.

The meetings I had with Texans provided me with helpful feedback on what is needed to help us weather the current economic storm and keep families safe. I will take the ideas I gathered and continue to build support for pro-growth, low-tax economic policies in Washington and common-sense solutions to the many problems we face.
